Jenny Russ: boats and trails and roads

We started off the day with a tour of Ross Castle. Built in the 1400s, it has some amazing views of the Loch and rooms filled with medieval furniture. From there, we got on two separate boats, each of which could hold only 10-12 people. We sailed to innis fallen, which is a tiny island holding a monastery. This monastery is considered one of the oldest universities in the world. Then we got back on our boats and began to sail to Lord Brandon's cottage in the Black Valley. However, on the way there, we were bombarded by torrential rain alternating with moderate sunshine. The boat that I was on (with Kendall, Emma, Julia, Mac, Joseph, Madeline, and Olivia) broke down in the middle of the loch, and we had to be towed by the other boat until our engine started working again.
Mac miraculously fell asleep in the middle of the rain (his hood was pulled over his head, and he looked like a "baeby" turtle), and Kendall and I tried and failed to get Conrad to sing. Eventually we got to the cottage where Anne got us all hot chocolate and we ate lunch. Then we set off on a "tree hour hike" through the Black Valley. On the hike, we saw loads of sheep and horses, the boys played the Odds Game, and we chatted with Con and his son, Naoise. After probably 5 or 6 miles we got to Kate Kearney's Cottage, where we are now eating dinner.
Even though it has been raining on and off all day (and it has been more on than off), we are all in surprisingly good moods. Can't wait for tomorrow!
